iPad 2 – Features for Teachers

I was an early adopter of the iPhone, and more recently, the iPad. Being an early adopter has it’s advantages one being that you get to experience the thrill of actually exploring the technology that is changing the way we interact with computers while introducing others to it (which I can rationalize as part of my job, really honey, I can). But, it also has its downside. How do you stand on this breaking wave of gadgetry growing ever taller by the day? Nevertheless I think the iPad 2 offers some compelling reasons to buy your first tablet or, in my case, upgrade. There are a few things educators will want to take note of…

1. Forward and rear-facing cameras turn the iPad into a HD (720p) video camera. With the iMovie app, students and teachers can easily shoot, edit and export video directly from one device while the front-facing camera allows for video chat (think global collaboration).

2. Built in gyroscope and new apps to take advantage of a new processor. I think there’s huge possibility to do Science with the iPad with the gyro, GPS, and Accelerometer. We’ll have to see what apps come forward but, Garage Band immediately got my attention. It’s already an amazing piece of software for learning to play instruments, composing, remixing, etc. I love how you can either play digital instruments using the touch screen as well as plug in your acoustic instruments. The potential of Garage Band in class becomes magnified when coupled with the next feature…

HDMI video out (requires $39 adaptor) in 1080p resolution along with full video mirroring allows teachers and student to present from the iPad directly via a projector. This effectively eliminates the niche of interactive white boards in my opinion. The cameras can be used as high quality document cameras as well to project books, demonstrations, etc. I think this is a huge feature that makes iPad 2 have a legitimate place in any classroom.

Now, if it could only play FLASH content…

And yes, I will probably buy one.
