Opt out OK?

Is it ok in this day and age for a teacher to decide to opt out of technology?  Some teachers contend that they’re surrounded by it their entire lives outside of school ergo  school should be a place where they play, have conversations, write with pen and paper. Afterall, that’s how they’ll take their IB exams.

One Response to Opt out OK?

  1. Hi Jeff,
Firstly, great news that you are coming back to the region. Secondly, as you know the IB Diploma years are part of my brief in my role as HS technology integrator. Not, it’s not OK to opt out!! In a busy school day, with IA deadlines looming each week, sometimes the only way to communicate, discuss, advise and look over drafts with students is through forums, wikis (using the individual option in Moodle)….the very minimum should at least be to use email. We all know that High School students work on different time zones – you only have to check the activity log in our Moodle to see when assignments are submitted, the times that email arrives. How many students drag themselves out of bed for before-school meetings? Let them sleep – and let them ask the questions when they think about them – why not? Best to have a healthy asynchronous relationship online instead of a limited face-to-face rushed corridor chat. Pen and paper – well, of course we need to give the students opportunities to ‘write’ – however it won’t be for much longer…
